Happy Holidays from the GFWI Podcast!
Our hosts are taking a short holiday break, but we are gifting you with some fun fishy podcast recs in the meantime!
Hi all, co-host Christine here, dropping a little message into your inbox tonight to wish you the happiest of holidays from myself, Amber, and Josh!
We are taking a couple weeks off before we come back for season 3, with our 2024 in review episode! You can *totally* take the next couple weeks to catch up on our last 43 episodes! Or, if you are all caught up- first, THANK YOU! Second, I’m going to recommend a few fishy or fish adjacent podcasts to also check out.
My first rec is probably my favorite podcast of 2024 - The Podcast Aquatic, coming from Tennessee Aquarium. This podcast makes it very clear why public aquaria like TN Aquarium are so essential to conservation and aquatic sciences. I’ve really enjoyed every episode, and I really want to visit that aquarium now! Here’s a link to the episodes out so far.
Next rec: Fish of the Week! Sure, we were guests on this podcast this year, but I have been a fan of this podcast for a long time. Want to learn more about fish of the USA and even some international species? This is the podcast for you! Thanks again to Katrina and Guy for having us on.
Next rec: Aquadocs Podcast. If you have an interest in aquatic animal medicine and welfare, this is the podcast for you. Dr. Greenfield-Feig has had some incredible guests on! Lots of episodes to check out, one of my faves is the one all about Elasmobranch Stress and Reproduction.
Honorable mentions: If you are interested in lab animal things, you should check out the LASt Word Podcast from AALAS. Another aquarium podcast I’ve been meaning to listen to, and I hope to in 2025: Aquarium of the Podcific from Aquarium of the Pacific.
Did I miss a podcast that you enjoy and you think we should check out? Let us know in the comments!
I also wanted to remind y’all to check out the content our friends at Fishkeep and Chill are making! We’re hoping to see a podcast from them in 2025 as well.
As a reminder, you can still check out the ANZAAP website and join them for their annual symposium this February! There’s a virtual option for folks who can’t travel. We’re working on something fun for the symposium - stay tuned!
Podcast news: Josh will be part of an upcoming Story Collider event! You can join him live at Caveat NYC - details are here! There’s also a virtual ticket option if you want to tune in and cheer on Josh with us! We’ll be sure to share a link to the podcast recording when it goes live, too!
Social media news: Join us on BlueSky, as we transition away from X at the end of 2024. BlueSky is a great place to check out fellow science communicators and fish folks! You can find us at @gettinfishypod.bsky.social
We’ve created a Discord server! This is kind of like a bunch of chat rooms where you can discuss all things fish, fish-adjacent, and our podcast, too! You can access it via the Discord application on your computer or on your phone. Check it out today via our invite link, right here!
Streaming news: Amber and Josh are working on a project with Tom'n'Nateor Pictures, providing their voice acting talent to a new series, Mobile Suit Gundam ABRIDGED. Check it out on Youtube! Episode 2 is live now, too!
Check out our Twitch channel for VOD of our past Twitch streams, like our MISS Shark Madness bracket selection. You can also find VODs of our streams on our Youtube channel.
Merch news: Check out our vinyl stickers, they are inexpensive, help support the podcast, and come with a promo code for our full online store with shirts and mugs! Check it out on Spring. If you buy a sticker from our Ko-Fi, you get a promo code for our main merch store that never expires!
